☀ Welcome New Board Members - Plus August Update

August and the dog days of summer are here.  We have a just few quick updates for you this month:

Welcome New Board Members!

We are pleased to announce that Beth Hall and Paddy Katzen have joined the Friends Board!  Beth and Paddy have already helped the Friends over the past year in a variety of ways, and we are happy to have them both in a more formal role.

Hains Point Community Event

Hains Point Community Event

The National Park Service will host a "Get to Know your Park" event at Hains Point on:

Saturday August 14
9:00 am to 1:00 pm

Learn more about the history, natural history, programs, services, sustainability initiatives, and more of this beloved local park. This event will also feature partner organizations which will provide visitors with information on angling, biking, safety, birding, other local parks, and the health of the Potomac. Bring your families and join us outdoors to see East Potomac Park as you've never seen it before!

Volunteer Update

Visitor Counts

We were pleased to see 8 volunteers at our in-person training in July.  If you missed the training, you can still help out!  Go to the Visitor Count Resources page to read the Handbook and get forms.  Then sign up for a shift on SignUp Genius. If you have any questions, send us an email at [email protected]. It only takes 15 minutes to count visitors, and we have shifts throughout the day on selected dates.

We will have our next in-person training session in the fall.

Titanic 110th Planning

We are making good progress planning for the Titanic 110th anniversary (taking place in April 2022.)  We will have interpretive displays in the park, as well as a cocktail reception.  If you haven't been involved yet, now is a great time to join the planning committee as we flesh out the details of this event.  Send a quick email to [email protected] if you'd like to get involved.

Demonstration Garden Watering

Because our water source is at Harbour Square, this opportunity is restricted to Harbour Square Residents only. It takes 30 - 45 minutes to water the garden, including managing the hoses, and it helps to have a buddy for this task. Visit the Demonstration Garden Watering Resources page to read instructions and sign up.

Bench Painting

We are still working with the Park Service to host a bench painting work party.  Stay tuned....
